³⁵ Jonathan Erects Fortifications in Jerusalem and Judea. When Jonathan returned, he convened the elders of the people and secured their agreement to build strongholds in Judea, ³⁶ to increase the height of the walls in Jerusalem, and to erect a high barrier between the citadel and the city so that the citadel would be isolated and its occupants would be unable to engage in commerce with the city. ³⁷ The people worked together to rebuild the city. Part of the wall above the valley to the east had collapsed, and the quarter called Chaphenatha was also repaired.
